God gave us rules to live by which were- "You should have no other God except me. You must not use my name carelessly. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it for me. Love your parents. Do not kill or steal or tell lies. Be faithful to your husband/wife. Do not want the things that belong to others." Jesus' new commandment to love one another is the foundation on which being a Christian is all about. Why did Jesus said love the Lord your God is the greatest commandment?

Why does Jesus call "Love One Another" a "New" commandment? Jesus had lived with his disciples and have lived by example for them (and als us today) to see and take heed. Before his crucifixion, Jesus wanted to make sure that his disciples know what kind of love he had displayed and demonstrated. His disciples (and also us today) have to understand that demontrated love of Christ is a challenge to us. He calls it a new commandment because he wants and desire to see his disciples (and us today) practice and demonstrate his kind of love towards others. This 'love one another' means living in peace and acceptance with each other but most importanly living in peace and acceptance with those who will not dare do the same for them and will mistreat them for the work of Christ. Jesus set the commandment in preparing his deisciples (and us today) for the challenge of doing his work and glorifying his name in this world
