The physical and emotional pain Jesus suffered for us on the cross was of great importance and significance. As God revealed to prophet Isaiah(Isaiah 29:13) "These people come near to me with their mouth and honour me with their lips but their hearts are far from me" Because of this unyeilding attitude towards God, Christ Jesus had to endure physical and emotional torture so that our hard hearts could be softened and moulded into the shape that God desired for us. This act of Love prevented us from self destucting and enabled the long awaited reconciliation between God And us to come to pass.Unfortunately we are mere humans and we need all of our senses to be activated to believe and have faith.I.e seeing, feeling, etc makes for believing.    If it was just a spiritual detachment from God, then I believe that only half the purpose of Jesus Death would be fulfilled and that we would still be burdened with our sinful ways.
