"Was Jesus trying to incite his death (eg. temple cleansing, accusation of leaders?) Jesus wasn't trying to incite his own death- he was human after all so didn't want to die an early death. Rather, Jesus knew what was wrong and what was right so told it as it was. He didn't care about the reaction he would receive if he trod of people's toes. He knew what God wanted him to say and do, so he followed his Father's guidance and Word.

Why did Jesus´ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God? Jesus wanted to suffer as we suffer as humans. He wanted to demonstrate that he could take all the physical and emotional suffering any man could endure and still, in the face of this adversity, follow the Father and his commandments unconditionally. Perhaps this type of suffering was somewhat lesser than being spiritually separated from God.
