How did Jesus "equip" his disciples for powerful work by taking away their material possessions?

Jesus took away all the worldly possessions of his disciples and instructed them to rely only on Him and the Holy Spirit. This way, He could prove to them that only He is needed for their journey and all else is baggage. Everything they will need is Him alone and He will empower and take care of them in their journeys.
