What does Jesus mean that "Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled and whoever humbles himself will be exalted"?
In the parable Jesus explained that if someone invited you to wedding dont sit on the front seat because maybe someone who is more important than you will sit in that seat you are about to taken, and the man in-charge of the the occasion will tell you to take the lower seat, you will be ashamed. In life this is true if you exalt yourself than God you will be punished. For instance in the congregation, you are one of the Pastors everytime you hear your members clapping their hands on your preaching beware its for God not for you. If you think you are the one that makes this people to appreciate you its wrong be humble give back to God all the praises and glory---be a servant.

How does Jesus want to care for the people of Jerusalem (Israel), and how do they respond?
Jesus care so much to the people of Jerusalem that He often wanted to gather their children together, like hen gathers her own brood under her wings. He lilke to comfort them but the people of Jerusalem refused to accept that offer. Many times in the old testament God continue to send prophets for them but these people rejected them and eventually put those prophets to death. The stubborness and disobience of these people led them to captivity for many decades. The last, God send them is His only Son Jesus whom suffer the same fate and crusified Him.

Why did Jesus“ penalty for "sin" need to include physical and emotional pain - why not just spiritual separation from God?

Christ's mission was to edify God's faithfulness to His creation, and in so doing He chose to suffer excruciating pain in enduring inhumane punishments handed down to Him by the so-called scholars and teachers of the law so that we in turn will be awakened and strengthen our spiritual belief and be worthy of being saved from eternal damnation.

He conquered fear of physical and emotional pain to demonstrate love for us, true faith and obedience in glorification to the will of God the Father our Creator.

"For whatsoever God does is well done!"
