How does the host respond when people reject his dinner invitation in order to pursue their possessions and relationships?
As a Host  that’s God forsakes forever the sinner who has been once awakened, and who grieves the Holy Spirit. The invitation is full and free; but when it is rejected, and people turn willfully away from it, God leaves them to their chosen way, and they are drowned in destruction and perdition.

What does Jesus mean that "Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled and whoever humbles himself will be exalted"?
Whosoever exalteth ... - This is universal among people, and it is also the way in which God will deal with people. “Men” will perpetually endeavor to bring down those who endeavor to exalt themselves; and it is a part of God’s regular plan to abase the proud, to bring down the lofty, to raise up those that be bowed down, and show “his” favors to those who are poor and needy.Precedent of Our Lord Christ: He takes upon him the form of a servant, comes not to be ministered to, and waited upon, but to minister, and wait to be gracious. We can see also in Mat.10:24; Mar.10:44 and Joh.15:20

How does Jesus want to care for the people of Jerusalem (Israel), and how do they respond?
Christ justly withdraws from those that drive him from them. They would not be gathered by him, and therefore, saith he, "You shall not see me, you shall not hear me, any more," as Moses said to Pharaoh, when he forbade him his presence, Exo_10:28, Exo_10:29.  The judgment of the great day will effectually convince unbelievers that would not now be convinced: "Then you will say, Blessed is he that cometh," that is, "you will be glad to be among those that say so, and will not see me to be the Messiah till then when it is too late."

Jesus Christ has shown himself willing, freely willing, to receive and entertain poor souls that come to him, and put themselves under his protection: How often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen gathereth her brood under her wings, with such care and tenderness!
