It's a mob thing. If you go with the tide of multitudes, even if they are wrong, you are with the "in crowd." If you are in the minority and disagree with them, there is a good chance of becoming a social outcast. So you sacrifice what is right for the popular vote even if it is sometimes wrong.

People put popularity above doing what is right because they want to remain in power and get personal benefits for themselves and be glorified. This is greed and selfishness without giving regards to the truth. Pilate might be in trouble if he did not fulful the wish of the people to crucify Jesus.

When Peter realised he had denied knowing Jesus, why did he cry?

Peter cried because he was proven wrong by Jesus. Remember he vehemently objected that he would deny Jesus. Yet he did and when he realized he was wrong, he wept.
