It was normal for them to be under Roman rule - normal in a sense that they had somehow gotten used to it, but not normal in that they were satisfied under the Romans. They simply tolerated it and learned to build their lives with it. They probobly got used to the class system, and having an upper aristocrocy, something totaly strange for most of the world today. Even todays monarchies are different, merged with capitalism and democracy. It is important that we see the life of Jesus and His time as a 'normal' life for them: Jesus being a carpenter and people buying furniture (or whatever He sold) from Him. What we forget is the daily strife of life experience by Jesus' contemporaries, and the Pharisees' and Sadducees' class struggle. But it is important to remember these things, in order to get an acturate picture of who Jesus was, and the reality of His life on earth.
