Jesus was trying to teach us that in giving it is not the amount that is important, rather it is the right motive and attitude that count. If we only give because we do not have need of it already or we give only what is excess for us, then it is not giving. When we give because we expect something in return or because of selfish motive/reason, then it is also not giving. We should give from the heart, expecting nothing (except perhaps that God will be pleased with us), and to give to genuinely share what we have, that's how Jesus want us to give.
