Jesus "reads" and understand the true sentiments and intent of our heart, so when we express through words he knows whether we are good or evil as it comes from our heart. This is evident when the Pharisees challenge him on healing on Sabbath or saying "you sins are forgiven " for the Pharisees intention was to accuse Jesus of blasphemy for so saying as "only God can forgive".
