Herod tried to kill Jesus because he was afraid that another king may posses his throne.Also it is written by prophet Jerimiah about the killing of the male children from two years below. so it is just the fulfillment of God's words. That is God is faithful and does what He has promised.

Given the scandals associated with the women Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and the wife of Uriah (Bathsheba), why do you think they were mentioned in the geneology of Jesus?

Those women are mentioned in the genology of Jesus because these were the women who has special events in their life and in marriage relation out of which Jesus' genology began.
