Why do you think the priests, scribes, elders did not answer Jesus?

Because they knew fully that Jesus authority was from heaven, but they had expected Him to say otherwise ( authority of men), to form an accusation against Him.

What did Jesus state as the primary purpose of the temple, and how might this apply to today?

The main purpose is for prayer and worship God in the name of Jesus Christ, and today we must use the church of God for the same purpose,( prayer and worship.)

What is in the heart of the tax collector (rejected by society) that the Pharasee (religious leader) seems to lack?

The tax collector stood meek and humble in the house of God and asked for His Love and mercy as a sinner instead of exalting himself as the religious leader.
