Why did the soldiers mock Jesus?

The mocked Jesus to humiliate Him and also fullfiling the scripture which says the Son of man will come and they will mock and beat Him.

What did you learn about Jesus` background that stands out or surprises you?

It is interesting to know about Roman rule and the practice of syncretism. Looking at Jesus' background it is not suprising that even his sermons centred mainly on the poor, lowly and the downtrodden since these are the ones who constituted the majority of the people that Jesus grew up with. Of interest also is the distinction between the Pharisees and the Sadducees. It is suprising that Jesus at age 12 had the wisdom to challenge the scribes who had spent years reading and studying the gospel. Such wisdom could only have come from some divine inspiration or influence.

"According to Jesus, what does it mean to be loved by God?"

To be loved by God is first proven through the act of sending His son to die for our sins so that those who believed in Him would have eternal life. However, for us to earn this eternal life, we must first believe in Jesus as our Saviour and in turn once we believe in Him, the Father will also accept us through his bountiful love. To be loved by God therefore means that we must follow His commandments dutifully and He will in turn accept us as his children.
