Why did Jesus answer their question with a question? Why didn`t he just say that his authority came from God? He knew their thoughts and that they wanted to trick him. He asked them a question knowing that the answer to his question would be the answer to their question. They knew this but their hearts were hardened and so they didn't want to confess with their own mouth that Jesus was sent by God. I also thing he answered with a question because if he said directly that his authority is from God they would have accussed him of blasphemy and might have arrested him before his work was done. He still had to keep who he was a secret.
