Jesus defines a great person as one who serves others. What did Jesus mean when he said he "did not come to be served, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many."?

Jesus came to serve as an example of how His disciples should serve. He was humble, soft, loving,and extremely patient. He did not come to show his disciples how to rule over others. They were to be His servants. They were to follow His teachings as He commanded. James and the sons of Zebedee did not understand what Jesus meant by the cup He Himself would drink. When he told them; "are you able to drink the cup that I drink", He meant his persecution and cruel death on the cross. Jesus came into this world to free man from sin. The same goes for today. We are to serve and be disciples ourselves.
